The little keyboard that couldn’t
Typing with the PSP’s on screen keypad is one of the most annoying things in the world. I don’t think anyone would disagree that the PSP really needs a keyboard attachment. Way back in the day at E3 2004, when Sony was showing off the PlayStation Portable for the first time, they gave the press a look at some potential attachments for the system. The two that really stood out were the keyboard and cellphone USB attachments. See below.

The most interesting part is that the plans suggested the accessories didn’t have conventional keypads, but used a digital touch-screen display. This implied that the two accessories could actually be combined for a single attachment, allowing you to flip a switch to change between the keyboard or phone display.
Unfortunately, neither one would ever see the light of day. Some say that the PSP just doesn’t have the right market to make use of a keyboard or cellphone accessory. I would disagree and say that releasing a keyboard/cellphone accessory would expand the PSP as a communication device.
It’s also very possible that some of the plans for the PSP were used for the Sony Mylo instead. In any case, it is very disappointing that we still haven’t got any kind of keyboard attachment yet. Perhaps Sony will include one in the proposed PSP “redesign” ?
