The new price of the PlayStation Portable

Several weeks ago, it was revealed that the PSP Value Pack would be going on sale at EB Games for $199, the same price as the Core system. Turned out, it wasn’t a sale at all, but a universal price cut.

PSP Price Drop

With the Value Pack’s new low price, it only made sense that the rest of the bundles would see a lowered price as well. Last week, Sony made it official. “We have always been passionate about making great entertainment accessible to everyone, and the new price for PSP, as well as the continued growth of the ‘Greatest Hits’ library, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding the PSP community,” said SCEA President Jack Tretton. “We are pleased that we are able to engineer savings for the consumer at this stage of PSP’s lifecycle, allowing more individuals to experience PSP for the first time. In particular, we have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend.”

I suspect that we will soon see the new price ripple into the European and Asian markets. The new prices for the handheld are as follows:

PSP Entertainment Pack: $220 (orig. $250)
PSP Value Pack: $200 (orig. $250)
PSP Core System: $170 (orig. $200)

The exceptionally low price for the Value Pack is because stores are phasing the bundle out in favor of the Entertainment Pack. Hopefully a $30 price drop will be enough to boost PSP sales.
