First look: Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War

Square Enix is bringing a lot to the PSP’s table this year. On top of Crisis Core and a Final Fantasy Collection, Sony’s PlayStation Portable will also be getting the strategy-based Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War. There is still no confirmation on a release date, but we’ve put together an overview of everything we know about the game so far.
The Lion War, or “Shishi Sensou” in Japanese, is not a totally new game in itself. Rather, The Lion War is an updated port of the original PlayStation One game. We haven’t seen any videos of gameplay yet, but one would assume it will be handled in the same fashion as the original + fancy new menus.
Since we announced the game last year, we have learned some new bits of information. Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSP will include completely new cutscenes, characters, and job classes. Among the new characters will be popular stars from FFXII. The new job classes will include the Dark Knight class and the Onion Knight class (from FFIII).
Unfortunately, it is hard to predict how different FFT: The Lion War will be from the original with out any solid gameplay footage. All we have to run on is the official trailer from Jump Fiesta and several screenshots (see below).

[…] Can’t wait for the likes of FFVII: Crisis Core and FF Tactics on the PlayStation Portable? Neither can we. Some clever PSP hackers were able to get the original Final Fantasy VII working on the PSP a long time ago. However, a real PS1 emulator was never released since Sony took it into their own hands. Maybe if they put Final Fantasy VII in the Network Store, people wouldn’t be so eager to emulate it on their own. […]
[…] We have some bits of new information on the plot as well. The Lion War will not be a direct port of the original PS1 game, but a completely new adventure. The story takes place during the same time as the original, so many of the original characters will be present in the PSP version. On top of the revamed graphics, the PSP sequel will sport a brand new battle system. […]
