PS3 Required for PS1 Games

Sony promised that the 3.0 firmware would allow PSP owners to download and play PS1 games directly from their PSP, no PS3 required. However, it looks like Sony has changed their mind. Last night, the official documentation for 3.0 was released, and it states that a PS3 IS required to download PS1 games. An extremely disappointing move from Sony. However, with the PS3 launched several nights ago, Sony has not made any decent PS1 games available yet anyways.

Despite all the commotion this news has stirred up, I still believe that Sony will come through. The 3.0 firmware is able to emulate PS1 games so it’s only a matter of making the Network Store available to the PSP browser. We will get another PSP update in mid-December, the speculative 3.10 to accompany the Final Fantasy and new Loco Roco demo. I really expect 3.10 to include the Network Store on the PSP.

Besides, I have high hopes that people will start circulating the PS1 games on the web soon, in which case people without a PS3 could download them.
